Visionary Leaders in Osteoporosis and Bone Health

  • In addition to serving as President of the ASOP Board of Directors, Mr. Torkelson is a dedicated Physician Assistant in the Orthopedic and Sports Medicine department at the Mayo Clinic Health System. He specializes in adult lower extremity reconstruction, trauma, and the treatment of osteoporosis in the setting of fragility fractures. Mr. Torkelson operates the only Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) within the Mayo Clinic Health System. His commitment to education is evident in his role as an instructor of Orthopedics at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, where he inspires the next generation of medical professionals. Mr. Torkelson has also presented on starting FLS programs both regionally and nationally.

  • Dr. Goode, a board-certified orthopedic trauma surgeon, a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, a member of the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the ASOP Board of Directors Vice President, brings a wealth of expertise and a strong professional standing to his practice.

    In the Mobile area, Dr. Goode plays a pivotal role in overseeing the only truly comprehensive orthopedic osteoporosis clinic. His active involvement with the University, serving on the Medical Alumni Association Executive Board and managing the Frederick N Meyer 5013c nonprofit organization, further demonstrates his expertise and commitment to orthopedic care.

    Dr. Goode's unique approach to orthopedic patient care elevates and standardizes the level of care regardless of the hospital system, ensuring the best possible outcomes for all patients. He aims to provide personalized, comprehensive care that considers each patient's unique needs and circumstances.

  • Dr. Bruns, in his role as the secretary of the ASOP Board of Directors, plays a crucial part in osteoporosis prevention, treatment, and education. His initiative, the Bone Health Clinic at SSM Health Orthopedics, is a testament to his commitment to preventing subsequent fractures and improving bone health in the community. As a Certified Clinical Densitometrist (ISCD), his qualifications ensure the highest standards of care. His collaborative efforts with other healthcare professionals guarantee the most comprehensive treatment for osteoporosis, providing reassurance and security to those affected.

  • Mr. Cozadd serves as the treasurer of the ASOP Board of Directors. He has developed a comprehensive bone health clinic with TRIA Orthopedics in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His clinical practice is dedicated to treating osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease. He is particularly interested in secondary fracture prevention and perioperative bone health optimization. He is a current member of the American Orthopedic Association’s Own the Bone steering committee, where he helps integrate and advance osteoporosis care in the orthopedic setting. Additionally, he enjoys lecturing on osteoporosis-related topics and mentoring prospective FLS sites.

  • Mr. Phipps, the CEO and Executive Director of ASOP, is a nationally recognized expert in bone health. His dedication to this field, which he has been passionate about since 1980, is unwavering. His work, which includes specializing in bone health and implementing Fracture Liaison Services (FLS), is a testament to his commitment. From volunteering with the local ambulance service to holding paramedic positions in hospitals and insurance, his dedication to improving the quality of people's lives motivates him. He is a founding member of the Iowa Bone Club, serving as its treasurer.

     

    He founded The ASOP, intending to improve provider education, training, and recognition in the field of bone health and osteoporosis. His work is creating standardization within the field and is poised to have a significant impact on reducing the incidence of fractures in the US in the future, giving hope to many.

  • Dr. Lake, the Director of Education at the ASOP, is a nationally recognized bone health expert, author, teacher, and speaker. Her work focuses on post-fracture prevention and implementing fracture liaison services (FLS). Her certification as a Clinical Densitometrist (ISCD) further validates her expertise. The FLS program she developed at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, a Star Performer with Own the Bone (AOA), has made a significant impact. She has trained hundreds of FSL providers and actively mentors hundreds more, inspiring others with her achievements.

  • With a wealth of experience, Dr. Dempster is a Clinical Pathology and Cell Biology Professor at Columbia University in New York and Past Director of the Regional Bone Center of Helen Hayes Hospital, New York State Department of Health, West Haverstraw, New York. He earned a First-Class Honors degree and a PhD from the University of Glasgow in Scotland and completed postdoctoral studies in Switzerland and France.

    Dr. Dempster's role as a Past President of the International Society of Bone Morphometry and his service on the Scientific Advisory Council of the National Osteoporosis Foundation are significant. These positions have allowed him to shape the direction of bone pathology and osteoporosis research, influencing the work of many in the field. He is a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society. Dr. Dempster’s iconic micrographs of osteoporotic bone have been widely reproduced in the scientific and popular press, including displayed at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.

    Dr. Dempster's role as an Associate Editor of Osteoporosis International and his service on the Journal of Clinical Densitometry editorial board are significant. These positions allow him to contribute to the dissemination of important research in the field, shaping the direction of bone pathology and osteoporosis studies. The National Institutes of Health has continuously supported his research studies for 35 years, a testament to the quality and impact of his work.

    Dr. Dempster's significant contributions to the field are evident in his over 300 research papers on the pathophysiology and treatment of bone disease. He is the Editor in Chief of the Vth edition of the highly respected textbook Marcus and Feldman’s Osteoporosis (affectionately known as “Big Red”). In 2019, Dr. Dempster was elected as a Fellow of the ASBMR in recognition of his contributions to bone metabolism.

    Dr. Dempster is an active Rotary International member and a Paul Harris Fellow.

  • Dr. Jackson, a board-certified neurosurgeon and bestselling author of the book ‘The God Prescription,’ Was a distinguished presenter at the Liberty and Health Alliance Conference on 1/8/22, where he shared the stage with renowned medical professionals such as Dr. Ben Carson and Dr. Peter McCullough.

    Dr. Jackson's academic journey is marked by excellence. He earned his BA from the prestigious University of Chicago, followed by a medical degree from Wayne State University. His training in general surgery at Northwestern University and his Neurosurgical Residency at Penn State University are testaments to his commitment to learning and his pursuit of excellence. He further honed his skills with a complex neurosurgical spine fellowship at the esteemed Medical College of Wisconsin.

    As the visionary Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Michigan Neurosurgical Institute, P.C., Dr. Jackson has been instrumental in shaping the institute's mission and leading it to success since its establishment in 2004.

    Dr. Jackson's commitment to addressing healthcare needs in Michigan is evident in his pioneering initiatives. In 2017, he founded the MNI Great Lakes ECHO LLC, introducing the first Project ECHO in Michigan and the second Bone Health Project ECHO worldwide. His creation of the MNI Great Lakes Addiction Medicine and Chronic Pain and their COVID-19 ECHO series, the first of their kind in Michigan, is a testament to his dedication to saving lives by addressing the opioid and COVID-19 provider needs.

  • Dr. McClung is an endocrinologist with a particular interest in metabolic bone diseases and disorders of calcium metabolism. As Founding (now Emeritus) Director of the Oregon Osteoporosis Center in Portland, Dr McClung has cared for patients with osteoporosis and related conditions for the past four decades. He developed quality control procedures for bone density testing, was involved in many major clinical trials of osteoporosis treatments and has participated in developing osteoporosis guidelines for several national and international organizations. His work has significantly advanced our understanding and treatment of osteoporosis. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts, numerous invited papers, and book chapters and co-authored the Bone and Mineral Manual. Dr McClung was a charter member of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry and currently serves on the Boards of the International Osteoporosis Foundation and the North American Menopause Society, as well as on the editorial boards of several journals related to metabolic bone diseases. He is a Professorial Fellow at the Mary McKillop Center for Health Research at the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne.

    Dr. McClung's role as an educator is as significant as his clinical work. He brings to the ASOP Board many years of experience in educating clinicians managing patients with osteoporosis. The Oregon Osteoporosis Center, under his leadership, has been a hub for training courses in bone densitometry and osteoporosis management since the mid-1990s. For the past 15 years, Dr. McClung has directed an osteoporosis workshop for Endocrine Fellows, inspiring the next generation of clinicians. His teaching prowess is evident from the teaching awards he has received from several societies and his frequent invitations to speak and teach at national and international clinical conferences.

  • Dr. Miller, The Distinguished Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver and the Medical Director of the Colorado Center for Bone Health in Lakewood, Colorado, is a renowned figure in the field of medicine.

    After receiving his medical degree with Distinction from The George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC, he became an intern in medicine and chief medical resident at the University of Rochester School of Medicine in New York. Subsequently, he completed a clinical and research fellowship in the Division of Renal Diseases at the University of Colorado Medical Center.

    Treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women has been the focus of Dr. Miller’s research. He has been the Principal Investigator of several clinical trials evaluating the safety and efficacy of various therapies now used or considered for use in these patients, such as alendronate, ibandronate, risedronate, and zoledronic acid, parathyroid hormone, and renal bone disease. Based on his research, Dr. Miller has authored or coauthored more than 350 publications, including original articles, chapters, and books. He has contributed his work to the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, Osteoporosis International, and the Journal of the American Medical Association. Notably, Dr. Miller was Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Clinical Densitometry for eight years and is on the editorial boards of Osteoporosis International, Calcified Tissue Research, The Journal of Women’s Health, and the National Osteoporosis Foundation’s Clinical Newsletter.

    As a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of numerous professional organizations, Dr. Miller's influence in the field of medicine is significant. He was a founder of the Metabolic Bone Disease Society of Colorado in 1980 and is its current president. He also served as the founding president of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry. Dr. Miller's leadership roles extend to The National Osteoporosis Foundation’s Interspecialty Council (NOF), the Professional Practice Committee of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR), and the Board of Directors of The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF).

    Dr. Miller's professional contributions have been widely recognized and received numerous awards. These include the prestigious Honorary Doctor of Science from Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, PA; The Lasker Award from The Colorado Chapter of The American College of Physicians, and Outstanding Teacher, Publication(s) and Researcher of The Year Awards from the UCHSC. His dedication to teaching and research was further acknowledged with The Outstanding Volunteer Faculty Award from Denver Health and Hospitals. Most notably, Dr. Miller was awarded the Career Achievement Award (2005) and The Distinguished Clinical Professor promotion (2006) by The Department of Medicine of UCHSC.

  • Dr. Olenginski is a board-certified and fellowship-trained rheumatologist and ABIM General Internal Medicine and Rheumatology.

    Dr. Olenginski's unwavering commitment to the disease state of osteoporosis is evident in his role as the physician lead for the Geisinger HIROC Program. His ACR, ISCD, and BHOF memberships, along with his position on the ASBMR Secondary Fracture Prevention Coalition, further underscore his dedication. His numerous presentations at ACR, BHOF, and ISO, as well as his active involvement in the UNM Bone Health TeleEcho and BHOF FLS Echo, demonstrate his comprehensive understanding of the field. As a certified Clinical Bone Densitometrist (ISCD), Dr. Olenginski's expertise in osteoporosis is unparalleled.

  • Dr. Parker, a fourth-generation physician, brings a wealth of experience to his practice. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and completed his Internal Medicine internship and residency at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. His journey continued with Endocrinology subspecialty training at Duke University. In 2003, Dr. Parker began his clinical practice as an endocrinologist in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he has been dedicated to patient care. His commitment to the field was recognized when he was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology in 2005.

    Dr. Parker's commitment to advancing the field of endocrinology is evident in his extensive research and clinical practice. He is certified in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, and Diabetes and Metabolism. His dedication to learning is further demonstrated by his certification as a Clinical Densitometrist in 2002 and his Endocrine Certification in Neck Ultrasound (ENCU) from the American College of Endocrinology. Dr. Parker practices at Wilmington Health, where he also served as Medical Director of an evidence-based obesity treatment program (Health Management Resources at Wilmington Health) for more than eight years. His research spans multiple areas of endocrine disorders, including adrenal disease, obesity, osteoporosis, and type 1 and type 2 diabetes, with PMG Research/ICON/Accellacare. He is a Consulting associate in medicine at Duke University and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has been a member of the Board of Directors for the Coastal Carolina Chapter of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) since 2014.
